General Z co-listed emoji the smiling face but be careful-it means something completely different to them

Smile in General Z? Better to look at your back.

What was once the universal symbol of warmth and joy has taken a bad turn – at least in the eyes of General Z.

The classic smile face emoji now means something completely different from those under 30.

Instead of conveying happiness, the yellowish-chopped face is now seen as opposing, passive-aggressive or direct sarcastic.

And if you are sending it to colleagues or new friends, it can rub them wrong.

Hafezat Bishi, a 21-year-old practitioner, recently told The Wall Street Journal that she was amazed when her older associates used Emoji Smiley in email and texts.

“I had to remember that they are older because she uses it sarcastically,” Bishi said, explaining that she often watches the emoji as following a “side eye smile” than true enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, Sara Anderson, a 31-year-old promoter coach, told Outlet that she regularly includes emoji to add “Light” to her messages.

But this is exactly the detachment – what looks friendly with older people can come out as a fonna or even bite the new crowd.

According to Erica Dhawan, author of the “digital body language of the body: how to build confidence and connection, no matter the distance”, older generations tend to get emojis in the value of the face, while the “digital locals” assign completely different meanings.

“People over 30 tend to use emoji according to their vocabulary,” Dhawan Journal told that General Z, Emoji’s meanings have evolved into a new lexicon.

But the generating gap is not just about smiles.
