Dave Portnoy gets Trump in office for slow economy: ‘Don’t be on your back and tell me it’s raining’

Sports founder Barstool Dave Portnoy withdrew against President Donald Trump’s attempt to divert the blame for a reduced American economy-telling the Commander-in-Chief in a post on social media, “Don’t be under your back and tell me it is raining.”

Portnoy reacted to Trump’s comments Wednesday after a report by the Department of Trade showing that the US Gross Domestic Product contracted 0.3% in the first quarter of 2025 – the first economic contraction of the country since 2022.

In response to the report, which came just like Trump marks 100 days in his second term in office, the president took on social truth to claim that the extensible effects from Joe Biden’s administration were guilty.

“This is Biden’s stock market, not Trump. I didn’t get it until January 20,” Trump wrote on Wednesday.

“Tariffs will soon start to start, and companies have begun to be transferred to the US in record numbers … This has nothing to do with fees.”

But Portnoy, a Trump voter, was not convinced.

Posting a view of Trump’s message on X, he wrote, “What is that old expression? Don’t throw me back and tell me it’s raining?

Despite his past support for Trump, Portnoy has increased more and more critical in recent weeks as his personal investment has received a big hit due to unstable markets and comprehensive administration tariff policy.

In early April, Portnoy revealed that he was down nearly $ 7 million, a figure he later reviewed to $ 20 million amazing – approximately 20% of his net value.

“I don’t even understand these tariffs,” he admitted during an April 7 episode of “Barstool Rounddown”, during which he exploded Trump for Golf in Florida as the markets slipped.

The stock market has blazed since Trump took office on January 20th.

However, the disappointment of the open media figure did not stop him from sharing a short and friendly exchange with Trump at UFC 314 in Miami on April 12.

While Trump made his high profile entry into Kaseya center along with his grandchildren, he welcomed several public figures, including Portnoy.

The two shook hands and exchanged pleasure. Portnoy later said he appreciated Trump’s stance on water pressure – a favorite point of talking to the president.

Trump’s call for patience follows a series of clear titles that record his 100-day story.

A Wall Street Journal editorial noted that it was the worst performance for Dow Jones and S&P 500 in the first 100 days of a president since Richard Nixon.

Meanwhile, an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipso survey showed Trump’s approval assessment at just 39%, with 72% of respondents who believe his economic policies are likely to cause a recession.

In particular, 51% of the surveyed Republicans expressed concern that Trump’s approach could lead to further economic decline.

Public opinion was also very negative for tariffs, with 64% who did not accept its strategy.

As markets remain unstable and political temperature rises, Portnoy criticism reflects a wider concern among conservative voters once solidarity in the Trump camp.

The post has requested comment from the White House.
